There is a particular silence that happens before you attempt your partner's family language for the first time. It feels like a test you have not revised for.
It is worth knowing that the people on the other side of it are not administering a test.
The Decision Was Already Made
Somebody's mother, watching a partner attempt her language badly at her own table, is not scoring the grammar. She has already decided the attempt counts. That decision was made before you arrived, usually before she met you.
This is the thing that gets it backwards. The reader assumes acceptance is the reward for getting it right. In practice the acceptance came first, and the attempt is what cashes it in.
The evidence is in how these things actually go. Nobody in that family has ever corrected a mangled sentence and moved on coldly. They repeat it back, slower, and then they tell somebody else at the table what you said.
Why the Attempt Reads So Loudly
An attempt in somebody's language is expensive and visibly so. That is precisely why it registers — it cost something, in public, in front of people whose opinion you care about.
The version where you wait until you are good enough removes the cost, and with it most of the meaning.
What They Are Waiting For
Not fluency. A sentence.
One unprompted attempt at the table, about something ordinary — the food, the drive, the weather, somebody's kids. It does not have to be right and it does not have to be more than a few words long.
What it has to be is unassembled. The version that dies is the one where you build it silently for eleven seconds, lose the moment, and say it in English.
The Small, Specific Job
You are not learning a language in the abstract. You are learning the thirty or so things that get said at that particular table, at the speed they get said, so that one of them can arrive on its own.
That is a much smaller job than it looks from the other side of the silence.
