There's always one. In the group, on the trip, at the table — the person who speaks it, so they do the talking.
It's convenient for everybody. It's also the reason you're still not speaking, and it's worth looking at honestly.
The Arrangement Forms Without Anyone Agreeing to It
Nobody decides this. It happens on the first evening, because somebody has to order and one person can, and by the second day it's simply the system.
They order. You point at what you want and they relay it. When a waiter asks something, every head turns to them. Within a week the group has a designated speaker and five people who have stopped attempting anything at all.
Ten days of continuous exposure to the language, and your total production is "thank you", four times.
What It Does to Them
Worth considering from their side, because they rarely say it.
They're working. Every meal, every taxi, every shop, every problem routes through them. They can't drift off in a restaurant because they're the interface. A holiday for everybody else is a fortnight of low-grade admin for them, and they'll usually be too polite to mention it.
The kindest thing you can do for the person who speaks it is stop needing them for the easy parts.
The Easy Parts Are Most of the Parts
And they genuinely are easy — not in the sense of requiring no work, but in the sense of being a short and repeating list.
Ordering. Asking for the bill. Buying a ticket. Asking where something is. Saying how many people. That's most of what gets said on a trip, and it's the same handful of phrases in every one of those situations.
Take those back and the arrangement dissolves. Not because you've become fluent — because you no longer need relaying for the ninety per cent that's routine.
What Changes Between You
The dynamic shifts, and more noticeably than you'd expect.
You stop being somebody who is managed. They stop being staff. And instead of one person talking while five people watch, there are two of you having a go — which is a completely different trip, and considerably better company.
