There's a feedback loop in language learning, and unlike most things described that way it's genuinely mechanical rather than motivational.
Worth mapping, because loops don't stay the same size. They tighten.
The Loop
You can't produce at speed, so speaking is uncomfortable. Because it's uncomfortable, you do less of it. Because you do less of it, production doesn't develop. Because production doesn't develop, speaking stays uncomfortable.
Four steps, each causing the next. No character flaw required at any point — the loop runs on its own once it starts, and it starts for essentially everybody.
Why It Tightens Rather Than Holding Steady
Two things compound.
The first is that avoidance generalises. It begins with one situation and spreads to adjacent ones. Not ordering, then not asking, then not attending the thing where you'd have to. Each avoided situation removes another opportunity, so the rate of practice keeps falling.
The second is that the discomfort attaches to the language itself rather than to the situation. After enough instances, thinking about the language produces a small aversion — which is why the app goes unopened on precisely the evenings you'd intended to use it.
So the loop doesn't sit still. Opportunities decrease and resistance increases, in the same direction, at the same time.
Where It Can Be Cut
Only one point in the loop is actually available.
You can't decide to be comfortable — that's downstream of ability. You can't reliably force yourself into more real conversations, because the discomfort is the thing you're routing around, and willpower loses that argument most evenings.
What you can change is the first link: whether you can produce at speed. Fix that upstream, in private, with nothing at stake, and every downstream step reverses on its own. Production improves, so it's less uncomfortable, so you do more of it.
The Loop Runs Both Ways
That's the useful part. The same structure that tightens also unwinds, at the same compounding rate, once the first link changes.
It just has to be changed somewhere the discomfort can't reach.
