You have someone. And notice what you actually remember — not the mistakes, which have gone entirely, but the fact that they did it.
Effort Is Stored Differently From Performance
People forget competence almost immediately. It reads as the background state of the world; somebody speaking well is unremarkable, and unremarkable things don't get stored.
Visible effort is different. It carries information about the person — what they were prepared to spend, and on whom. That isn't linguistic information, it's social information, and social information is exactly what human memory is optimised for.
Which produces something counterintuitive. Somebody who spoke your language fluently is a fact you know. Somebody who spoke it badly on purpose, for you, is a thing you feel.
It's Read as a Statement About Them
When somebody makes an effort in your language, the inference is automatic and it isn't really about language.
It says they thought this was worth difficulty. That they were willing to be worse at communicating than they had to be, in front of you, for a while. In a world where the default is that everybody meets in English, choosing not to is a small, legible, deliberate act.
Nobody misses it. Least of all the people it's aimed at.
You Can't Do This Any Other Way
Most gestures are ambiguous. A gift can be thoughtless. A compliment can be reflexive. A visit can be convenient.
A language is unambiguous, because the months are non-transferable. There's no cheap version and no way to fake having done it. That's precisely what gives it the weight.
Which Means Being Bad at It Is Fine
This is the part people get backwards. They wait until they're good, on the theory that the effort will land better once it's impressive.
It won't. It lands hardest while it's obviously difficult, because that's when the effort is visible. The fluent version reads as background, exactly like everybody else's competence.
Go now, while it's still bad. That's when it counts for most.
