The Trip Is a Permission Slip, Not a Plan
A future trip does something very specific to your brain. It makes not starting feel responsible. There's no point beginning now, the logic runs, because it'll have faded by then — better to concentrate the effort closer to the date.
So the trip does the opposite of motivating you. It licenses six months of nothing, followed by a fortnight of panic, followed by a week abroad pointing at a menu.
Then the next one gets booked and it starts again.
A Fortnight Doesn't Work, and You Know Why
Automatic speech is a physical skill. It comes from repetition spread across time, the way every physical skill does. It doesn't compress — you can't sleep eight hours in one night, and you can't do six months of production practice in two weeks.
What a cram gives you is a set of phrases held consciously, retrievable in about three seconds each, which collapses the moment somebody speaks at real speed. Which is to say: exactly what happened last time.
The Trip Was Never the Point Anyway
Be honest about what you picture when you imagine speaking the language. It's rarely the airport.
It's the fourth morning in the same café, ordering without thinking about it, and the man behind the counter says something back that isn't on the menu — and you answer. It's a conversation on a doorstep that goes somewhere. Small, unremarkable, and the actual reason people do this.
Those don't happen because you crammed. They happen because the phrases were already automatic when you arrived, so your attention was free to be somewhere else. On the person, not on the verb.
Start With No Deadline
Take the trip out of it. Begin now, for no occasion, with nothing to be ready for.
Then when the trip comes, and it will, you'll simply already be able to. The date was never doing any work.
