There's a number in your phone you've been protecting.
Maybe it's 40. Maybe it's 900. You know exactly what it is, and you know exactly how it would feel to watch it go to zero.
Here's the part nobody says out loud: that number has never once made you able to speak.
What the Streak Is Actually For
A streak is a retention mechanic. It exists to make closing the app feel like a loss. That isn't a conspiracy — it's what it was designed to do, and it does it extremely well.
What it was never designed to do is measure whether language is moving into the part of your brain that produces speech. It can't measure that. It measures attendance.
So you protect the number. On a bad day you open the app at 11pm and tap through the easiest lesson you can find, just to keep it alive. You know that lesson taught you nothing. You do it anyway. The number survives.
That isn't learning. That's paying rent.
The People Still Doing It
Go and look at any language learning forum. Enormous streaks everywhere, all attached to the same question: why can't I speak?
They aren't lazy and they aren't stupid. They've been diligent for years. They've been diligent at the wrong thing, and the counter kept telling them it was working.
A streak is the most convincing evidence of progress you can have while making none.
Let It Break
Not as a gesture. As a test.
Let it go to zero and watch what happens to your speaking. If your ability drops, the streak was doing something and you should go back. If nothing changes — and nothing will change — you've just proved the number was never attached to anything.
Most people won't do this. The fear of losing the number feels like the fear of losing progress, and those two things have been deliberately fused together.
They're separate. You can drop one and keep the other.
What to Protect Instead
There's a better test, and you don't have to remember to take it.
Is a phrase in your target language looping in your head right now? Not because you're revising it. Uninvited — the way a song gets stuck.
If it is, language is transferring into automatic production and there's nothing you need to do about it. If it isn't, no streak on earth is going to change that.
One of those measures your app usage. The other measures your mouth.
Delete the streak. Keep the language.
